MMM bans scrap metal recycling at Landfill Sites

Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality (MMM) has announced a ban on scrap metal recycling and second-hand goods dealing at landfill sites across the metro, citing safety concerns and links to criminal activity.

According to the municipality, the decision followed consultations with external departments and was influenced by challenges in regulating second-hand goods permits and the risks associated with scrap metal trading activities. “The Municipality has resolved that scrap metal recycling and second-hand goods dealing will no longer be permitted at any landfill sites within the Mangaung Metropolitan area,” MMM said.

The municipality further stated that scrap metal dealing had been identified as a major contributor to landfill-related killings and other illegal activities taking place at landfill sites.

MMM warned that reclaimers who fail to comply with the directive could face the revocation of their permits and be denied access to landfill sites. The municipality urged waste reclaimers to adhere to the new regulations to help maintain safety, order and lawful operations at landfill sites across the metro.
