The Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality is working around the clock to solve the recent disruptions in refuse collection across affected parts of the city. The aim is to return the service to full stability.
Head of Mangaung’s department of community services, Dr Thabang Thinda, says the majority of the affected areas will be back on schedule within the next two weeks. He said the recent disruptions stemmed from a combination of factors that include unexpected breakdowns of the waste collection fleet, delays in the supply of critical spare parts, and staffing shortages linked to internal shifts.
“However, we are strengthening our fleet management strategy, including scheduled preventative maintenance and supplier agreements to reduce turnaround times,” he explained.
The northern suburbs, including Bayswater, Noordhoek, Estoire and Deals Gift, have been among the most affected. “We are prioritising areas with the highest population density, schools, clinics and business nodes to reduce health and environmental risks while progressively covering all wards.”
Deploying temporary contractors in high-pressure zones and increasing shifts and weekend operations are part of the municipality’s contingency plan to restore the refuse removal schedule.
“We deeply regret the inconvenience caused and appreciate the patience and cooperation of our residents. Waste management remains a critical priority, and we are committed to restoring reliable, sustainable, and equitable services.”
