Matlosana Municipality drowning in debt

REFILWE MEKOA

Matlosana Municipality drowning in Eskom and Midvaal Debt.

The municipality that is based in North West owes Eskom R200 million and Midvaal R50 million. The municipality’s Mayor Mike Khauoe said they have made payment arrangements with both entities.

Matlosana Municipality comprising of Klerkdorp and Orkney has been reported to have been drowning in debt and unable to meet its legislative objectives. Khauoe explained that they had a meeting with Eskom last week where they set out a R5 million per month payment plan until the debt is paid out.

“Our tariffs within the municipality are not correct, they are not in line with what Nersa has recommended. It is a challenge for the municipality . We have accepted the challenges that we have and we just have to move forward and intensify certain things that we are doing, especially the debt collection within our municipality where we have certain areas that are Eskom controlled and we are unable to use our own system of collecting debt,” he said.

Khauoe believed the Midvaal’s debt will be cleared very soon and the municipality will start at a clean slate. He said both Midavaal and Eskom accounts are given preference.
