The Bloemfontein-based Premier Soccer League club, Marumo Gallants, has appointed a football manager to help steer the struggling side forward as they continue to battle the very real threat of relegation once again.
The club has brought in one of the country’s most experienced and respected football administrators, Peter Koutroulis – affectionately known as “Mr Sundowns”.
While Gallants are fighting to stay afloat on the field, there have also been ongoing off-field battles in boardrooms and courts. The hope is that Koutroulis can help steady the ship and restore stability.
Over several decades, Koutroulis has built a formidable reputation for his role in professionalising football in South Africa, most notably during his time at the current eight-time consecutive PSL champions, Mamelodi Sundowns.
He has also been involved with clubs such as Black Leopards, Chippa United, and most recently Magesi FC in the PSL. In the National First Division, he has worked with Casric Stars, who are currently pushing for promotion to the top flight next season.
Meanwhile, Gallants suffered their 18th league defeat on Tuesday night, going down 3-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld. They remain 14th on the log and, at this stage, are only keeping clear of the relegation zone on goal difference. – MORGAN PIEK
