Bloemfontein residents and visitors are in for some excitement this coming weekend as the Mangaung Rose Festival is finally here. This festival is filled with surprises and fun activities for everyone in the family to enjoy.
For those who did not know, the word, Bloemfontein, means fountain of flowers. This was the reason for the festival being born in 1976, the idea being to show off the city and its beautiful flowers. To date, the festival is still something to look forward to.
Risna Opperman from Urth Garden Centre told Bloemfontein Courant the festival starts on Friday with an exhibition at 15:00 where the public is welcome to come and view flower arrangements, visual arts, ceramics and many other items. It will be taking place at the Urth Occasions Venue and if you miss this one, don’t worry, it will be taking place again on Sunday from 9:00.
”The crowning of Miss Rose Petal, a pageant presented by Anri Powell and Nadine Barkhuizen, will take place at 17:00. Entry forms are available at Urth Garden Centre.
“There will also be a Rose Fun Run on the Friday, where the best dressed according to the theme: floral, will win prizes. People should come dressed as funny as possible if they want to be considered for the prizes” said Opperman.
On the Saturday, the Hats and Heels High Tea at the Urth Occasions Venue is a must for ladies. Herman Lensing from Sarie and other speakers will entertain the tea lovers.
To end off the festivities, there will be a special rosy edition buffet from 9:00 at Urth Occasions Venue.
But there’s more: on the 24th, Noorderbloem Retirement Village will be hosting their internal rose festival which can also be enjoyed by the public. – Sazly Hartzenberg
