Many scholars across the country will be relieved that the holidays have started after the exams. Courant wanted to know what scholars do to keep themselves busy during this period?
For many it is an opportunity to get away from the books and take a back seat and relax a bit.
Bokang Mokotedi and Tlhoho Melamu from HTS Louis Botha will be catching up with friends and family and also pay extra attention to their social life. Melamu mentioned she will hopefully get time to use the time to prepare herself for the next quarter.
Lara van Zyl of Eunice told Courant she will be attending the Vrystaat Kunstefees (13-18 July 2015) and spend some time with her boyfriend during the winter vacation.
Although some will catch up with friends and family, watch movies, go on holiday and travel, some learners will also look to up their academic performance by attending various winter school programmes, which includes the CUT Winter programme from now until 10 July. Some will embrace the cold winter and prepare themselves for participation in various sport tournaments across the country.
Kiaan Skippers will be representing the Free State in the U.18 Craven week that is set to take place at Paul Roos Gymnasium, Stellenbosch from 29 June till 3 July. There are also a few school assignments that he’ll need to take care of.
Whatever learners will keep themselves busy with, there is always danger lurking.
Captain Steven Takeng from the police shared a few tips with Courant on how to keep safe during the holiday period.
• We appeal to people in residential areas to be aware of break-ins during the early hours of the morning. We have noticed a trend where criminals target houses in the early hours of the morning.
• We appeal to all people not to play with fire.
• We advise people to mark their property (serial numbers). It helps in identifying property found after being stolen.
• We appeal to people who will travel to make sure their cars are in proper condition before hitting the road.
• We ask people to please report any suspicious people, vehicles or items in their area right away.
