Learner struck and killed by lightning

A grade nine learner from Taiwane Secondary School in Theunissen was tragically struck and killed by lightning during yesterday’s thunderstorm. The deceased learner and her grade 11 friend were walking home from school on 21 October when the incident occurred.

“The grade 11 learner sustained severe injuries and is receiving medical care at Virginia Hospital. Psycho-social support will be provided to learners and teachers,” the spokesperson of the Department of Education, Howard Ndaba, said.

Ndaba further added that the Free State Education MEC, Dr MJ Maboya, has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased learner and wishes a speedy recovery to the hospitalised learner.

“The local clinic has been contacted for further support and religious leaders have been engaged to offer additional comfort to the school community,” Ndaba concluded.
