“The farming community cannot make a more important investment than in the development of its youth.”
According to a statement, Kovsies Agri is more than just a student organisation at the University of the Free State. It is a group of dynamic students who focus on closing the gap between the agricultural value chain and the farmers of tomorrow.
“Their goal is not just to broaden students’ knowledge by focusing on practical experience and networking opportunities, but also to create a family type of environment at the university for students with the same interests in the agricultural industry,” the statement reads.
The organisation’s chairperson, Nicola Wiid, said they are thrilled to launch Kovsies Agri as it provides students with a unique opportunity to gain practical experience and feel part of a community that is passionate about agriculture. “We believe that agriculture is the backbone of our economy, and it is essential to equip students with the skills and knowledge to make a positive impact in the industry.”
By hosting events like farm visits, guest lectures, and workshops that will engage students and provide them with a deeper understanding of the agricultural industry, the organisation is committed to innovation and tackling the challenges of the future competitively. Students from all faculties will also have an opportunity to learn from each other.
The academic Departmental Head of Agricultural Economics at the University of the Free State, Prof. Frikkie Mare, said the newly launched Kovsies Agri “contributes to the sexy side of agriculture. It is an organisation led by young people for young people to bring together the next generation of farmers and agriculturalists that will take care of agriculture and, thus, take care of our future.”
The chairman of the family farmers network Saai, Theo de Jager, said the students are the farming leaders of tomorrow, the future CEOs of agribusinesses, and the foundation of the food systems as they change over time. “That’s why Saai needs to be close to them!” he said.
Kovsies Agri officially launched on 14 March together with their brand-new website and various social media pages. Visit the website kovsieslandbou.co.za or follow them on Facebook at Kovsies Agri.
