LEE KHOTLELE

Bloemfontein – University of the Free State (UFS) athletes, Gideon Trotter and Rynhardt van Rensburg, both turned heads at the Varsity Sport Athletics in Stellenbosch recently.

Trotter won the 100m race in a time of 10.79 seconds while Van Rensburg lost out to Nijel Amos in the 800m.

The race came down to an exciting finish between Van Rensburg and NWU-Pukke’s Olympic Silver medallist, Amos, with the latter taking home the title in his first 800m race of the year.

On the Varsity Athletics Team Points table at Stellenbosch’s event, UFS Kovsies lie fourth with 79.5 points.

UP Tuks are at the summit with 121 followed by NUW Pukke on 102. University of Johannesburg occupies the third spot 90.5 while Maties are below Kovsies with 69.

Meanwhile, NMMU Madibaz, UWC and TUT follow with 40, 48, 44 points respectively.

With the final leg of the Varsity Sports athletics programme looming, Anneri Ebesohn, originally from Bloemfontein, is certainly an athlete to watch.

Topping the leader board at fifth in the world, she came first in the 400-metre woman’s race in the first Varsity Athletics fixture in Port Elizabeth and is sure to be looking to repeat this in the finals.

The final leg takes place at the University of Pretoria on 28 April. Follow all the action of the Varsity Sports events which are shown on SuperSport channel 210 every Monday evening at 17:45.
