After seeing a sharp contrast between the school uniforms of two schoolboys coming from different backgrounds, where one boy looked decent and the other shabby, one entrepreneur is determined to make a change in the lives of the less fortunate for the second year.
Owner and founder of Novice Clothing, Mlungwane Mthiya, said he intends to do this through an inspirational walkathon, which will be held in Botshabelo later this year.
“Essentially, the event is a fundraising event for children of underprivileged schools. Last year, through the help of over 50 people who attended the 6-km walk to raise funds and awareness for the challenges school children in Botshabelo are facing, we were able to supply over 60 children with school shoes,” he said. “This year, depending on how many people participate, I’d like us to do a bit more than we did last year,” Mthiya said.
Working with his wife, Nthabeleng, and the assistance of Maureen Moopelo, councillor of Ward 30, the couple has identified three schools in Botshabelo they hope to provide with necessary supplies. The well-meaning trio has in the meantime requested the help of headmasters at the identified schools to help assist with picking out the children needing these supplies the most at each school.”This year, we’d like to not only donate school shoes but also calculators, school pads, and sanitary pads for struggling girls,” the Mthiya couple said.
The walk, which is in its second year running, will start at the hall in H-section, to Section G (close to Fairways). “Last year, people received the event really well and we requested R50 from everyone towards this cause. This year, we will pretty much be following the same model, but because we’d like to do more, we need more people on board,” Mlungwane said. While he realises that
several people will be sceptical about the
