Hiring incompetent people for high positions because of their political status is the reason for poor management and bad audit reports in municipalities.
COPE’s Northern Cape Member of Parliament Pakes Dikgetsi says the nation need to change this trend. He says municipalities need to ensure that the best people are hired irrespective of their race or gender. Dikgetsi was referring to a NamaKhoi Municipality Manager who MEC of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHTA), Alvin Botes says he is allegedly going to be suspended because of his Grade 8 certificate.
“We also applied to determine that from the municipality as COPE. We have been told that the municipal manager is in the process of improving his qualifications. He does have the necessary life skills and background in local government. We need competent people to run municipalities,” he says.
Rakgetsi says they support the NamaKhoi Municipality legal team that was granted leave on Monday to appeal against court judgement for suspension of eight councillors in connection with alleged irregular attendance of meetings. Rakgetsi says before the appeal is heard in court there will be no council meetings. He says if meetings are held they will be illegal gatherings unless people can oppose the appeal before 26 August.
