Harmony Gold employee dies while fixing a municipal pipe

Harmony Gold Mining Limited has expressed its deepest condolences to the family of one of its employees who died in Welkom when parts of a municipal trench collapsed onto him yesterday.

Harmony’s spokesperson, Marian van der Walt, says a 59-year-old engineering crew supervisor in Harmony’s Maintenance Department was on duty and assisted in fixing a  municipal water pipe in Jan Hofmeyer Road in Welkom. The mines assistance in this regard is not unusual.

Van der Walt says the deceased’s name is not going to be published out of respect for his next of kin.

He is from Meloding in Virginia.

Van der Walt says the accident does not count as a fatality because it did not take place on a mining licensed area. Management still views the accident as serious and will deal with it accordingly. – Christal-Lize Muller
