With the many changes that came into effect with Covid-19, changing the world as we know it, it can be agreed that the one thing which has stayed consistent, is music.
Grey College will this year be hosting their Nedbank Grey College Music Festival live and online. This is a first for the school but they promise to bring music that will unite people from all walks of life.
According to a statement from the school, the theme for 2020 is: Terugblik, which will be celebrating 15 years of Grey’tness. The festival was previously known as the Grey College Choir Festival, but in 2005 it was changed to a Music Festival in order to showcase the wide variety of talent of the Grey boys.
Head of Culture at Grey College, Brenda Myburgh, explained when she realised how many events and highlights the Grey boys will miss out on, she decided to do something for them to remind them that they should never forget their “Grey’tness”, no matter what the circumstances.
The statement says that the school will be celebrating the past 15 years of Music Festivals with some highlights from previous years and some new items by the boys of 2020. A surprise item by some of the Grey staff is definitely a “must see”, the statement reads.
Principal Deon Scheepers said it is hard to believe that the word “celebration” can even be considered in a year that has been so severely disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, Grey College Secondary School is proud to say that they would rather prefer to celebrate their grade 12 group of 2020 by means of a virtual music festival, than to dwell on “what could have been”.
Acting Nedbank Provincial General Manager for the Free State and Northern Cape, Gary Long, said as South Africa, especially the business sector, reboots amid the challenging lockdown, they are delighted to be the main sponsor of the Nedbank Grey College Secondary Music Festival during what is now accepted as the new normal.
“Social distancing and wearing masks are still mandatory but events like these resonate with Nedbank’s values and help us to find hope in the talented voices of the future,” he said.
The virtual festival will be hosted on 7 November at 19:00, so get your friends and family together, pop some corn and enjoy your all-time favourite hits. There are big prizes to be won on the night. Tickets cost only R150 per device, which can be bought on Quicket.
