The Bloemfontein-based Marumo Gallants have slightly adjusted their ambitions in the Premier Soccer League following a spirited victory over Kaizer Chiefs this past weekend.
Gallants came from behind at Soccer City on Saturday to shock the mighty Amakhosi with a 2–1 win.
The result saw Gallants climb to 10th on the log. With just two matches remaining, a top-eight finish—and qualification for next season’s MTN8—remains a real possibility. However, with a long break before their next fixture, their current position may shift depending on other results.
Finishing in the top eight is not only a sporting achievement but also financially beneficial, something a club like Gallants could certainly use.
Head coach Abdes Ouaddou has made it clear that they intend to fight until the very end, and a top eight finish is the new goal.
“Yes, of course. When you are competitors—and my players are competitors—you reach for your targets,” said Ouaddou.
“Now, of course, we have to look ahead. We still have two matches left, six points to play for, and a chance to finish the season on a high.
“Believe me, my staff and I are fully focused on setting this second target for the players and achieving it.”
Gallants’ next game is scheduled for 17 May, when they take on Chippa United at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein. – MORGAN PIEK
