FS MEC to launch 2022 Easter road safety campaign

Free State MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development, William Bulwane.

Free State MEC for the Department of Police, Roads and Transport (DPRT), William Bulwane, will tomorrow be launching the 2022 Easter Road Safety Campaign.

This campaign is a government initiative to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and prevent negligent and reckless driving on our roads during this busy period.

The department says in a statement that the Easter holidays is a time when the province experiences high volumes of traffic due to people travelling to visit their families, friends and attend special church service associated with this time of the year.

The Free State road network is at the centre of the country and connects six other provinces (KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, North West, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga) and the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. This period exposes the province to high risk of road crashes and fatalities.

In October 2021, the UN proclaimed the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021 – 2030 with the target of 50% on the reduction of road traffic fatalities and injuries by 2030. The province is thus commited to ensuring a reduction in fatalities and injuries on its roads.
