Free State is one of the five provinces in South Africa that will be visited by the Cuban Five.
ANC’s provincial spokesperson Thabo Meeko said the Cuban Five are expected to arrive at the Bram Fischer Airport in Bloemfontein on Wednesday. They are scheduled to visit Batho Location and address residents at Batho Community Hall.
The Cuban Five arrived in South Africa two weeks ago and have already visited Robben Island. They are also expected to visit Limpopo and KwaZulu Natal as well as Gauteng before going back to Cuba on July 4.
Meeko explained that there will also be the renaming of two government buildings after Fidel Castro and OR Tambo.
“The Cubans will have an interaction with other Cubans that are working in the country. This is a very fascinating programme to be undertaken by the province and it is an important victory for the world, as we know that the ANC as an organisation campaigns to achieve the rights of everyone,” he said.
The Cuban Five comprising Gerardo Hernandez, Ramón Laba?ino, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and René Gonzalez were intelligence officer who were arrested in the US in September 1998. They were later convicted by a Miami court on charges including conspiracy to commit espionage, murder and acting as an agent for a foreign government.
