Free State police have arrested two suspects in connection with drug dealing after a raid led to the seizure of drugs worth an estimated R161,600.
According to police spokesperson Thabo Covane, officers from the SAPS’ Operation Vala uMgodi carried out a raid at a jewellery store on Mooi Street in the Welkom Central Business District.
“The team of combat and proactive operators searched the premises and seized large quantities of drugs, including 450 grams of Nyaope, 666 grams of Crystal Meth, 449 grams of Mandrax, 151 grams of Crushed Methcathinone (Cat), 163 grams of Cat, 96 grams of Rock, and 498 grams of Dagga,” said Covane. Two small scales used for measuring the drugs were also confiscated.
Following the initial raid, officers proceeded to New Stands Informal Settlement in Thabong, where they arrested a 25-year-old male for drug dealing. “Police seized 171 full Mandrax tablets, three halves and quarters of Mandrax, and zip-lock plastic bags containing crushed Mandrax and Crystal Meth. The total weight of Mandrax seized was 160.01 grams, while the Crystal Meth weighed 9.25 grams,” Covane confirmed.
The suspects, a 34-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man, have been charged with dealing in drugs and will appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon.
