Free State boosts midwifery focus as SOMSA Congress heads to Bloemfontein

Free State MEC for health, Monyatso Mahlatsi, has paid tribute to midwives across the province in celebration of International Day of the Midwife, acknowledging their critical role in safeguarding the health and wellbeing of mothers and newborns.

The Free State Department of Health has also announced that it will host the Society of Midwives of South Africa Congress in Bloemfontein in August 2026, a move expected to bring together healthcare professionals to strengthen midwifery practices and maternal care across the country.

Marking the day on 5 May, Mahlatsi commended midwives working in clinics, hospitals and communities for their dedication under often challenging conditions, while reiterating the province’s support for the 2026 global theme, “One Million More Midwives,” which calls for greater investment in training, staffing and career development within the profession.

“With deep gratitude, we honour every midwife serving families across our province—in clinics, community settings and hospitals, often under challenging conditions. Your expertise and compassion saves lives every day,” said MEC Mahlatsi.

The Department made a commitment to continue their work with national and local partners, training institutions and professional bodies to strengthen the midwifery workforce, equip facilities, and support continuous professional development and wellbeing.

The congress is set to welcome midwives from across South Africa and representatives from countries within Southern Africa.

“It will be a moment of pride and a significant milestone—affirming our province’s reputation as a respected hub of midwifery excellence and leadership—with the Free State having contributed three SOMSA Presidents since the association’s inception in 2014,” the department concluded.
