Flood season deteriorates state of roads in FS

The floods have worsened road conditions in some parts of the Free State this season. This, after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) predicted that the province would experience torrential downpour.

Bloemfontein Courant previously reported that the provincial Education Department suspended classes in Qwaqwa due to heavy floods. The Mantsopa Local Municipality (MLM) reported that the condition of some roads has worsened due to heavy flooding. In their statement, the municipality mentions that the tar road that leads to Little Rock Resort, not far from Ladybrand’s old Hospital, has been washed away amidst heavy flooding. The municipality has promised to release a comprehensive report on Wednesday that will reveal the extent of the damage.

Meanwhile, the South African Red Cross Society (SARCS) had earlier issued a warning and tips amidst rainy weather. SARCS urged people to stay indoors and to never try to walk, swim, or drive through fast-moving floodwater.
