Mbulelo Khataza, known as DJ LeGoody (29) decided in 2019 to start collecting shoes to donate to his former primary school, Boliba Primary School in Theunissen. He was able to hand over 170 pairs of school shoes he collected from his family, friends and associates in 2020.
When asked what inspired him to do a school-shoe drive, he answered, “My aunt, Vuyiswa Khataza, inspired me. Every month, she would buy two pairs of school shoes; one pair for a boy and one for a girl. At the end of the year she would donate all the shoes she had bought during the year.”
He said his target for 2021 was to hand over more pairs than he did in 2020. “With the pandemic, a lot of families have been and are still affected financially and some parents will struggle to get their children school shoes. So for 2021 I want to hand over more pairs than I did in 2020.” He has already collected 480 pairs and said, “the date of the handover is still to be decided as I am still waiting for 400 pairs from two retail stores, but so far I have collected 480 pairs, some polish and brushes.” He said he has never encountered any challenges with the drive.
DJ LeGoody stated that he has been a DJ for as long as he can remember. “I am from a music-orientated family, my mom and sister are pretty good singers, I can also sing but I wanted to do something different than singing,” he explained to why he became a DJ. He said if he had one wish to be granted, it would be for everyone to be financially equal. “For the future, I would like to expand the school-shoe drive and donate to other schools,” he said.
