Derby Day In Bloemfontein

Rugby spirit has hit the City of Roses, with three local derbies set to take place at the CUT Rugby Stadium on Monday.

In the main game of the day, the CUT Ixias will face the in-form UFS Shimlas for the first time in the history of the Varsity Cup.

While the big focus will be on the main derby set to start at 16:45, the Young Guns league and Koshuis Rugby Championship will also kick off this afternoon.

The Varsity Cup makes provision for three teams, namely: the top division (Varsity Cup), the Hostel League (Koshuis Rugby Championship) and the Young Guns league (u.20s).

The CUT Tigers and the CUT Young Guns (u.20s) will make their debut in the Varsity Cup today when they face their UFS counterparts after having been promoted last year.

The Tigers got their promotion into the VC after defeating their old foes, Steinhoff Buffalos 17-16 in last year’s CUT Campus League.

They wrapped up their preparations last Wednesday when they defeated Heimat 31-27, and according to team manager Carel Korff they are fully prepared to take the field against three-time champions, Steinhoff Vishuis, today.

“We are more than ready to tackle Vishuis today in a tough game” Korff added.

Despite being new kids on the block the CUT Young Guns will hope to spring a few surprises ahead of their clash against the Kovsies Young Guns according to coach Deon van Wyk.

“The number of players in our squad is not as big our neighbour, Shimlas, but we are here to prove ourselves and give it a good go this year.

“Hopefully, in our second season next year, we will be more competitive. For now we are going to do our best,” Van Wyk further added.

The CUT Tigers will tackle the UFS Steinhoff Vishuis at 19:00 tonight, while the CUT Young Guns vs UFS Young Guns kicked off at 14:15.
