Deps of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Human Settlements to host FS Provincial Govan Mbeki Awards

MEC SM Mlamleli of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and the Department of Human Settlements, will host the Free State Provincial leg of the annual Govan Mbeki Awards on 24 July 2014 in Welkom.

A national initiative guided by the theme: Building the future today, together the aim of the Govan Mbeki Awards is to showcase excellent word done by the department with special emphasis to the department’s programmes to promote best practice in the delivery of the core mandate including Outcome 8 deliverables. Outcome 8: Sustainable Human Settlements and improved quality of household life.

The awards are further set to honour the struggle icon Govan Mbeki for his acclaimed contribution in the fight for decent housing and security of tenure. The awards also seek to acknowledge and motivate all role players in the housing value chain that have committed to partner with government in building sustainable human settlements and making a reality of the Freedom Charter Adage: There Shall be Housing, Security and Comfort.

The Awards are to be contested at both Provincial and National level. There are nine (5) categories of the Awards that the department will be participating in, with an additional MEC’s Merit Awards categories as listed below. AWARDS CATEGORIES:

*Best Priority Project
Priority projects are so named for their cornerstone role in the development of an area. These are critical projects that are prioritised and decided upon by the province with a view to speeding up developments or address specific or urgent housing need.

*Best Informal Settlements Upgrading
As the name suggest, these are project targeting the upgrading or development of informal settlements. The programme facilitates the structured upgrading of informal settlements.

*Best Social Housing Project
Social housing is a government subsidised rental accommodation for low income earners

*Best Woman Contractor
This is a category that targets women development in the construction industry in line with overall government development and women empowerment programmes.

*Rural Housing Projects
Construction of housing in rural areas has its own specific demands. This category seeks to acknowledge contractors in these areas who have excelled in construction despite the hardships experienced.

MEC’S MERIT AWARDS:

*Best Scholarship Student
This is a category for a best performing student in construction related fields who holds one of our scholarships or bursaries.

*Best Contractor of the Year
The overall best performer as decided upon by the MEC.
