The Department of Basic Education South Africa has issued warning against unsupervised pens down gatherings, emphasising that they are likely to spiral out of control within minutes when there is no planning or responsible adult supervision.
“Without proper oversight, the risks escalate sharply, from dangerous levels of drinking and violent altercations to damage to property and serious threats to personal safety. What begins as a celebration can quickly become a life-altering tragedy,” the department said.
Common risks include excessive drinking, physical fights and assault and harassment.
Learners and parents are advised to be cautious remote venues and unverified hosts.
“If you suspect dangerous gatherings or see promoters advertising shady ‘Pens Down’ events, report them to your school, SAPS, or parent.”
According to the South African school calendar, the fourth and final term ends from 10 to 12 December 2025.
