The department of correctional services launched this year’s Corrections Week at the Christian Revival Church (CRC) in Bloemfontein yesterday.
In attendance at the launch was Minister of justice and correctional services Michael Mashutha, along with his deputy Thabang Makwetla. The Corrections Week will run from 21 to 27 September. The starting point of the service was addressing the inner conflicts in individuals and issues of self-worth.
Free State commissioner of correctional services, Subashini Moodley says the department wants to highlight the importance of the church’s role in helping to rehabilitate offenders.
Part of the programme is a victim-offender dialogue and families and community members are encouraged to participate.
Hundreds of people attended the launch, all from varying faiths, while offenders present were from the Free State and Northern Cape.
During Corrections Week there will be the White Paper on Remand Detention Management as well as celebrating woman who have done beadwork and handcraft within the prison facilities.
“ A lot of offenders have lost hope and by partnering with the faith-based groups they wish to lift the hope in offenders again,” she says.
