Allanridge police found a dead man this morning after yesterday’s public protest.
Police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng says Nyakallong residents outside Allanridge wanted to march for employment at a nearby Target Mine company but the march was disapproved. He says residents burnt a passing by truck worth R500 000, blocked the streets with stones and looted foreign shops yesterday and this morning.
Thakeng says one resident was taken to a Welkom Hospital after being hit by a stone and two people are arrested for public violence and will appear at the Odendaalsrus Magistrate Court soon. He says criminals usually take advantage during a public unrest.
“We discovered that money and airtime were robbed from a foreign shop and we found the dead body behind Mashe Bottle Store. We found airtime inside his pocket and we will investigate whether the person is linked to the robbery that took place. Because the shop owner identified that the airtime as the same one that belonged to his business,” he says.
Thakeng says a case of murder, business robbery and public violence has been registered for further investigation. He says foreign shops are closed and the police are patrolling to ensure that there is stability.
