DA on education budget speech

REFILWE MEKOA

The Democratic Alliance in the Free State believes it’s important to be told what is happening with finances of the Education Department.

DA’s David Janse van Vuuren was responding to Education MEC Tate Makgoe who did not outline all the figures for his future projects in his budget vote speech. Makgoe was amongst four provincial governmental departments that outlined their budget vote speeches in Bloemfontein during the week. Van Vuuren highlighted that some of the issues were not addressed during the debates.

“There is a shortfall of R1.2 billion in that department at this stage. There are issues of some suppliers and teachers not paid and at this stage it is very disconcerting to see the money not being used where it is supposed to be, which is to help the pupils at schools. ANC is not really addressing the problems that we would like them to do. We are past elections time and by now we should be getting down to business. But it doesn’t seem like they are really interested and serious,” said Van Vuuren.
