D-day for licence renewals

The grace period that the department of Police, Roads and Transport has granted motorists to renew their expired driving licences ends on Thursday 31 March 2022.

This includes all the driving licences that expired from 26 March 2020, up to and including 31 August 2021, OFM News reports.

The Free State departmental spokesperson, Hillary Mophethe, said in a statement that there will not be any further extensions of the 31 March 2022 deadline.

The Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, previously stated the reason for the grace periods was due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic – which resulted in restrictions that led to the closure of Driving Licence Testing Centres, which in turn led to backlogs in the processing of licences.
