The Central University of Technology (CUT) has continued engagements with its Student Representative Council (SRC) following ongoing protests at the Welkom campus.
The university temporarily suspended academic activities from Thursday, (16/04), to create space for dialogue and prioritise a peaceful resolution to student concerns. According to CUT, discussions have remained constructive. “These engagements have been cordial and conducted in a spirit of mutual respect,” the university said.
The first meeting took place on Friday (17/04), followed by a second engagement on Sunday, (19/04). Several key resolutions were reached:
• Academic activities and campus operations will resume on Monday (20/04).
• The university will submit a letter of deviation to National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), allowing funded students in non-accredited private accommodation to remain there, pending verification of accredited housing.
• A joint task team comprising students and staff will continue verifying the quality of accredited private accommodation.
• The SRC and protesting students will submit a memorandum of demands to executive management, with an agreed timeframe for responses.
CUT has called on all students and staff at the Welkom campus to act responsibly, uphold the rule of law, and support efforts to restore stability and ensure the continuation of academic activities.
