Two children are in a critical condition in a Bloemfontein hospital after a taxi veered off the road this afternoon and collided into four school children.
Netcare 911 spokesperson, Chris Botha, says the accident happened along Dr Belcher Road at about 12:37. He says when paramedics arrived at the scene, two of the children were in a critical condition while two others escaped with minor injuries. He says at this stage it is still unknown how old the children are as paramedics were still assessing them earlier.
“They were treated at the scene by various paramedics and then transported to a provincial hospital where they are receiving care. At the moment we can’t disclose the type of injuries they sustained. They have to go through observation first and get x-rays to determine the severity of the injuries. But both of them were in a critical condition,” says Botha.
Botha says the exact cause of the accident is still speculative and will form part of the police investigation.
The police in Bloemfontein have confirmed that a 45-year-old man was arrested at the scene and will appear in court soon on charges of drunk and wreckless driving.
