Duane Petrus – Last week’s killing of two police officers in Bloemfontein could be linked to the spike in hijackings the city has seen over the past few months.
The Free State police commissioner, Simon Mpembe, says however, they don’t believe the two incidents are directly linked.
He added that they believe the killers were after the officers’ firearms, in order to use them to commit hijackings.
Ntsoake Molebatse was gunned down in front of her home in Freedom Square by two unknown suspects on Wednesday night.
Tshidiso Mphatsoe was shot four times the following day in Ipopeng Township.
Mpembe says they will try their best efforts to apprehend the suspect before Molebatse’s funeral on Saturday.
“There is one thing I can say, and that is that we will leave no stone unturned. We have established a task team that is up and running, and we are very close to catching them. We are going to deal with them, and they will have to face the full might of the law,” Mpembe said.
