Anchor of Hope made a call to community members to take action and do their part for the community via a competition. The call was for community members to nominate a park, sidewalk, or an old age home in your area for them to clean up or revamp.
The school principal of Duimpie Pre-Primary, Michelle du Preez, nominated an open veld right next to the school in Lormarins Street in Bayswater.
This specific area was so overgrown, to the point where the road was narrowed, and the drainage system was blocked. “It unfortunately also became a dumping site as well. School children walk to and from school through that specific area and as a result of the overgrown grass, they walked in the road,” she adds.
On 20 August Anchor of Hope went to cut the grass and clean up the area. “Anchor of Hope is doing such an amazing job around Bloemfontein and I was very excited to see the chance to nominate our area in Lormarins Street. I would like to extend a big thank you to Bloemfontein Courant and Anchor of Hope for the wonderful opportunity,” says Du Preez.
“It looks amazing now! Please support this great initiative. We must work together to create positive change for our children,” Du Preez says.
On that day, Bloemfontein Courant spoke to one of the community members who decided to lend a helping hand to the Anchor of Hope team. “The school distributed pamphlets to encourage people to join and I felt the need to help. It seems as if I am the only one who came out in my street. We need more people to help and do their part. But, this is a great initiative and I am happy to support it in the future.”
The founder of Anchor of Hope, Boeta Swart, says the main aim of this project and competition is to get the community involved and to instill hope in the community again. “We actually just want to get the community excited about doing their part and showing them that it does not really cost you anything to get involved.”
