This past weekend a collector took to Facebook to post a tribute to mothers with a curation of pink model cars on display. “Our club [Bloemfontein Model Motors] has at the moment no female members, all of us have or had a mother, a wife, daughters or sisters. So here is my collection of pink models to commemorate Mother’s Day and my best wishes to them,” Johan Pottas’ post read.
Pottas told Bloemfontein Courant that he does an annual post to commemorate Mother’s Day in memory of his late mother, his sisters, and his wife. “I decided to pack out my pink models, take a photograph of them, and post it on the Bloemfontein Model Motors Facebook page. The pink models were in my opinion the choice of the day, rather than just an odd selection,” he said.

As the only brother with three sisters and having lost his mother at a young age, he learned that a mother will not always be there and they are often not appreciated enough. “So now I do it for my sisters and wife. If I can, I spoil them a bit on the day or the Saturday before. But with my sisters living far it is just a post, telling them how special they are.”
Pottas moved to Bloemfontein in 1981 to further his studies at the then-University of the Orange Free State, he found love and decided to make the city his home. He is a member of the model car and memorabilia club, Bloemfontein Model Motors.
“I have had a few model cars that were lying around for a few years, then around about 2018 I started collecting again. I have tried limiting myself to the scale of 1:43 and sticking to two makes that I grew up with, namely Land Rover and Volkswagen. Through the years a few different scales crept in and as I always had a few miniature bottles of alcohol standing around in cupboards, I expanded my collection to include a few branded with alcohol themes,” he explained.
Currently, his collection is in the region of about 900 collectibles.
