Shimlas and Ixias want to build on momentum

The defending champions, the University of the Free State Shimlas, and the Central University of Technology Ixias, will be looking to build on their continuity during tonight’s third round of the Varsity Cup.

The Shimlas will be playing in their first home game of the season following away wins over the UCT Ikeys and University of Pretoria Tuks to maintain a 12-match unbeaten streak.

The champs host the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Madibaz at Shimla Park with kick-off at 18:30.

Ixias are on the road again this week and tackle the University of Johannesburg.

Following their 10-9 win over Ikeys last week, the side is feeling more confident, however, coach Skillie Bester told OFM Sport that they have to focus on their finishing off.

“The defence was brilliant, so obviously always hard work, but the one thing that we can do better is finish off.

“We had two or three, actually four opportunities where we could have scored.

“Actually we were over the line twice and we didn’t dot down, it’s stuff like that.

“So that will be the main focus. Just score the tries then it won’t be necessary to defend the whole time.”

This game, which is televised, kicks off at 16:45.

Tonight’s other matches sees Pukke away to the Tigers at the Green Mile at 18:30 and at 19:00 Maties host Tuks at the Danie Craven Stadium.

Round Three Fixtures (22 February 2016):

16:45 UJ vs. CUT Ixias – Johannesburg (TV); 18:30 UFS Shimlas vs. NMMU Madibaz – Bloemfontein; 18:30 UCT Ikeys vs. NWU-Pukke – Cape Town; 19:00 US Maties vs. UP-Tuks – Stellenbosch (TV).
