• 2006: A 603-carat diamond, the biggest found in thirteen years and the 15th largest in the world, goes on sale in Antwerp, the Netherlands, after being found at the Letseng Diamond Mine in Lesotho. It is about a third bigger than a golf ball, and is named the "Lesotho Promise".

• 1875: Gustav Preller, champion of Afrikaans, educationist and writer, is born in Pretoria.
• 1900: Start of Sherlock Holmes adventure "Problem of Thor Bridge" (BG).
• 1933: Esquire magazine is 1st published.
• 1957: Jacob Hendrik (Henk) Pierneef, SA landscape painter, dies in Pretoria at the age of 71.
• 1957: Ronny Belcher, SA actor and singer, is born.

• 1923: Young Stribling held light-heavyweight boxing championship for shortest amount of time (3 hrs). Referee overturns decision
• 1953: Jim Peters runs world record marathon (2:17:39.4).
• 1969: Baseball’s 1st divisional playoff games, Mets beat Braves 9-5 & Orioles beat Twins 4-3 in 12 innings.
• 1987: 1st "Scrub Sunday" of NFL football with replacement players.
• 2012: Formula One legend, Michael Schumacher, retires.
