• 1886: Oldest part of Johannesburg, Marshalltown, is planned.
• 1989: Sony purchases Columbia Pictures for $3.4 billion cash.
• 1998: Google is launched.
• 2003: Nigeria’s first satellite is launched into space from northern Russia.
• 2005: Controversial mining magnate Brett Kebble is shot dead in Melrose, Johannesburg, around 21:00 on his way to the dinner engagement. His vehicle and body are found on a bridge crossing the M1 to Pretoria. The police said the next day that they were looking at the possibility that Kebble was assassinated.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1954: Steve Allen’s "Tonight Show" premieres.
• 1991: "Princesses" premieres on CBS TV.
• 2003: Actress Halle Berry announces her separation from second husband, R&B singer Eric Benet.
• 1982: Filming begins on "Never Say Never Again".

Sports:

• 1964: Mickey Wright wins LPGA Visalia Ladies’ Golf Open.
• 1986: Brian Mitchell, SA junior lightweight champion, wins the World Boxing Association (WBA) title by beating Alfredo Layne of Panama in Sun City, Transvaal (now North West).
• 1939: Kathy Whitworth, Monahans Texas, golfer (7 time LPGA Player of Year)
• 1998: Judge Jefferys (62), SA athlete, dies in a car accident in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal.
