• 1692: Kingston Jamaica founded.
• 1938: 500 ton meteorite lands near Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
• 1717: The Free Mason Movement is founded in London. It was introduced into SA from the Netherlands in 1772.
• 2012: Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood becomes President of Egypt.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1916: Mary Pickford becomes the first female film star to get a million dollar contract.
• 1892: Dr Theodorus Wassenaar, Afrikaans poet, author and cultural leader, is born in Hendrina, Eastern Transvaal.
• 1956: "Steve Allen Show," returns on NBC-TV.
• 1963: 1st demonstration of home video recorder, at BBC Studios, London.

Sports:

• 1973: Danie Malan, SA athlete, sets a new world record in the 1 000m.
• 1960: Carel du Plessis, SA rugby flank and trainer is born.
• 1995: The SA rugby team, with François Pienaar as captain, wins the World Cup final match against New Zealand 15-12. Joel Stransky gains the winning goal just before the final whistle is blown.
• 1998: The game between Bafana Bafana, the SA soccer team, and Saudi Arabia ends in a tie with the score 2-2.
