The Bloemfontein SPCA has urged the public to report illegal ear cropping and maiming of dogs’ tails.
“Ear cropping or maiming of dogs’ tails is an illegal activity,” stated Bloemfontein SPCA Inspector Tebogo Maswanganye. “It is well known how important a dog’s tail is in communication and overall behaviour,” he added.
The inspector added that ear cropping serves no purpose other than cosmetic. “In this case the cruel way in which it was done is visible.”
Cropping of dogs’ ears and docking of tails contravenes the Animal Protection Act 71 of 1962. “Animal cruelty charges are laid when we find an animal in your custody in such a state,” stated Maswanganye.
The Bloemfontein SPCA stresses that animals experience immense pain when undergoing these ‘procedures’, and encourage the public to educate themselves regarding animal cruelty.
“We know we still have a long way to go, but we believe that animal welfare should be a daily practice for everyone,” stated the inspector.
The SPCA discovered a dog with cropped ears in the custody of a community member who reportedly rescued the animal. “We encourage the public to report to the SPCA incidents of this kind and not take responsibility into their hands as the results are complex,” concluded Maswanganye.
