Siwelele FC kept their momentum rolling with a hard-earned 1–0 win over Orbit College FC at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on Sunday, stretching their unbeaten Premier Soccer League run to eight matches.
It was a result that carried real weight. The home side climbed to 10th on the table and now sit just two points shy of the top eight, firmly back in the conversation as the business end of the season approaches.
Orbit came out firing and nearly caught Siwelele off guard in the opening exchanges. Lesedi Kapinga wasted no time in testing his range with an early strike, while Katlego Mkhabela injected pace and urgency into the visitors’ attack. Despite their bright start, though, they couldn’t turn that early pressure into anything concrete.
Siwelele made them pay. Against the early flow of the game, Chibuike Ohizu produced a moment of quality in the 10th minute, finishing off a slick counter-attack with a composed effort from the edge of the area.
From there, the hosts began to settle, enjoying more of the ball and controlling the rhythm of the match. Clear chances were few and far between, but Siwelele looked increasingly comfortable as Orbit was pushed onto the defensive.
The visitors tried to raise their intensity after half-time, but they struggled to break through a well-organised Siwelele defence, with goalkeeper Ricardo Goss rarely called into serious action.
A second goal nearly arrived midway through the half when Siyabonga Ndebele’s towering header crashed against the crossbar. Siwelele continued to press on, with Kgaogelo Sekgota, Gamphani Lungu and Manelis Mazibuko all testing the Orbit defence.
In the end, Siwelele’s greater attacking intent was reflected in their superior shot count.
The win halts a string of draws and strengthens their push up the table, while Orbit remains in deep trouble near the bottom. – MORGAN PIEK
