From Tuesday 1 June 2021 Vereeniging Extention Road and a portion of Vereeniging Drive in the south of Bloemfontein will be a temporary closed.
According to the Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) the temporary closure of the roads is caused by the construction work done by the city to build a new bridge and road that will connect Vereeniging Drive and Oliver Tambo Road directly.
The roads and intersections that will be affected until the completion of the project are:
- The Vereeniging Extension Road, up to the Hamilton industrial area (road that intersects at Oliver Tambo robots opposite SA Truck Bodies) to be closed.
- The Vereeniging Extention Road to be closed.
- The Vereeniging Drive and Ferreira intersection to be closed.
- Connecting route from Fauna/Uitsig up to the South Park landfill site entrance to be closed.
- South Park cemetery and Southern landfill site to be accessed only from Oliver Tambo Road.
The duration of this two-fold project is estimated to take a year, which means the new bridge and road will be completed by June 2022 if weather conditions permits.
The MMM says in a statement construction has already begun to ensure Ferreira Road is upgraded to be used as an alternative road during construction. The Ferreira Road will be used to access Oliver Tambo and areas such as Bloemanda, Rocklands, and Phase 2 from Vereeniging Drive (from Lourierpark, Fauna, Uitsig etc).
The scope of the project includes:
T1534 A: Extention of Vereeniging Drive and construction of bridge over railway line with interchange:
- A new dual carriageway bridge over the railway line.
- Re-alignment of Ferreira Road under the new bridge.
- A new intersection connecting Vereeniging Drive with Ferreira Road.
T1534 B: Widening of Vereeniging Drive to dual carriageway and construction of new intersection.
- The northern carriageway connecting Oliver Tambo Road with Vereeniging Drive 2.1km long.
- Construction of 3 intersections to Vista Park 2 and 3 developments.
- Rehabilitation of the existing southbound carriageway connecting Oliver Tambo Road with Vereeniging Drive, 2.1km long.
The following detours have been identified by the city and will be in effect until the bridge connecting Vereeniging drive with Vereeniging Drive Extension is completed:
- Vereeniging Drive via Memoriam / Ferreira / Monument Road towards Oliver Tambo Road.
- Vereeniging Drive via Ferreira / Taxi Street towards Oliver Tambo Road. By the robots at the end of Vereeniging Drive, there will be a temporary dual-carriage way route that goes right and drives straight along Ferreira Road – Taxi Street – M30 and behind South Park cemetery.
