School’s out, but safety stays: SAPS and Arrive Alive urge caution during holidays

In light of the third term break, Arrive Alive and the South African Police Services has encouraged parents and teachers to remind their children about important road and general safety during the school holiday.

According to Arrive Alive, many of the road deaths among pedestrians are caused by pedestrian inattentiveness. “This is where, especially our child pedestrians, fail to pay attention to traffic whilst distracted by cellular phones, music, etc.”

Parents are encouraged to teach children to be attentive and avoid distractions and to use all their senses near traffic and to listen and look for vehicular traffic.

“Be extra cautious when among friends. We often find pedestrians such as children chasing after something.”

SAPS general school holiday safety rules:

  • Don’t go out alone: There is safety in numbers. This rule isn’t just for little kids, it applies to teens, too.
  • Always tell an adult where you’re going: Letting someone know where you’ll be at all times is smart. If you’re faced with a risky situation or get into trouble, your family and friends will know where to find you.
  • Say no if you feel threatened: If anyone makes you feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, you have the right to say NO. Be strong and stand your ground.

Should you find yourself in danger or in need of help contact SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or Childline South Africa on 0800 55 555.

The fourth term will resume on 13 October to 10 December 2025.
