SABRINA DEAN – The Metsimaholo Municipality says it is taking a "rather safe than sorry" approach with drinking water after a major leak was discovered at one of the reservoirs in Sasolburg at the weekend.
Municipal spokesperson Gino Alberts says they do not know if the leak has impacted water quality but would rather urge communities to boil their drinking water until necessary tests have been completed.
"We are appealing and humbly asking our communities in certain areas to boil their water before they drink it," he says.
He says the affected areas are South Park, Sasolburg in town and the whole of Zamdela. "Our engineers are currently working on the situation. The reason we are asking communities to boil water is because we are still running tests to determine the quality of the water," he says.
Alberts says the municipality is not anticipating the leak to have any impact on water supply in the area. However, he says communities can play their part by using water sparingly until further notice.
