Some of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) members in the Free State are threatening to withdraw their membership by the end of April.
The members in the Maluti, central and southern regions state that if the Sadtu National Executive Committee doesn’t adhere to their demands, they will not attend the forthcoming provincial conference. According to Sadtu’s Mokele Oanyane, they consider the suspension of the three regional secretaries politically motivated.
“Their suspension affects the functioning of the union and issues cannot be properly addressed. The reason for the three regional secretaries’ suspension is because of allegations that they have attended a meeting of Zwelinzima Vavi in Bloemfontein. The meeting took place during the course of this month. The members will not be taking part in any regional, provincial or national activities until the matter has been addressed,” he says.
Oanyane says they also demand all suspended Sadtu members across the country be re-instated. “We are fully behind the support of suspended Cosatu General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi and for the convening of a special national conference that was made by other nine other affiliates last month,” he says.
