Case data shows that Gauteng by far leads the count in the nine provinces with 123,408 confirmed Covid-19 cases (an increase of 5,513 in a day). Western Cape has 84,254 (or 1,268 new cases recorded in a day), and the Eastern Cape with 58,860 infections in total has recorded 1,674 new cases in a day.
KwaZulu-Natal has 37,722 confirmed cases with 1,118 new infections recorded and North West has 12,722 with 831 recorded in the past 24 hours.
Data for other provinces is: Free State (8,290); Mpumalanga (6,073); Limpopo (4,160); and Northern Cape (2,044).
“The total number of tests conducted to date is 2,373,053 with 48,130 new tests conducted since the last report,” the minister said.
“Regrettably we report a further 135 Covid-19 related deaths – this brings the total cumulative deaths to 4,804. We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased,” Mkhize said.
However, he said, the number of recoveries is now 178,183.
Deaths and recoveries by province are Eastern Cape 772 deaths with 41,707 recoveries; Free State 47 deaths and 1,033 recoveries; Gauteng 917 deaths and 51,256 recoveries; KwaZulu-Natal 378 deaths and 10,403 recoveries; Limpopo 33 deaths and 1,685 recoveries; Mpumalanga 44 deaths and 1,597 recoveries; North West 48 deaths and 2,694 recoveries; and Northern Cape 15 deaths with 627 recoveries; Western Cape 2,550 deaths and 67,181 recoveries.
