Robbers may have been looking for MEC

It would appear that the nine robbers who broke into the house of Free State MEC for Finance, Elzabe Rockman, on Saturday evening were looking for the MEC. Rockman told Volksblad over the weekend that one of the robbers asked her boys: “Where is your mother?”

An armed robbery took place at the house of the MEC in Dan Pienaar, Bloemfontein, on Saturday evening between 20:00 and 20:15.

Rockman and her daughter, Caitlyn, were attending the launch of the new modelling agency @Models at Reizis Square in Navalsig, Bloemfontein, at the time. According to police spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo, Rockman was out attending to family matters when the incident took place.
However, Rockman’s two sons and a friend were at home when they were approached by approximately nine men who had their faces covered with balaclavas. The men used cable-ties to tie up the three boys and raided the rest of the house.

“A case of house robbery has been registered for further investigation. The robbers allegedly cuffed the boys with cable-ties and took two portable safes containing jewellery and coins. A laptop was also stolen. No-one was injured,” said Mbambo.

Rockman also told Volksblad the value of the coins could be between R400 and R500. She said the jewellery wasn’t very expensive, but has sentimental value because it belonged to her mother and grandmother.

Mbambo said no one was injured in the incident and no arrests have been made yet.
