Eskom spokesperson, Stefanie Jansen van Rensburg, tells OFM News that this plan Eskom announced earlier last month was due to the municipality’s failure to meet its payment obligation of at least R30 million on the 19th of last month.
She says the interruptions have since been cancelled following the deliberations between the municipality and the power utility.
“When the official notice of power supply to Tokologo Local Municipality was published in June this year. Tokologo was indebted to Eskom in the region of at least R31 million. There are a number of local municipalities in the province that are currently indebted to Eskom and the Free State is also the province with the most municipalities that are in arrears,” says Jansen van Rensburg.
In March this year, OFM News reported on the plans of Eskom to cut power supply to the municipalities in the Lejweleputswa District after it was alleged that it failed to honour their payment agreements.
The report went as far as stating that the municipality is among the six Free State municipalities owing Eskom approximately R6.2 billion.
Eskom national spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe, previously confirmed to OFM News that the power utility generally has a huge challenge with defaulting municipalities in the province and will continue with power interruptions to all municipalities failing to honour their payment agreement.
