SABRINA DEAN – Residents in three Free State municipalities breathed a collective sigh of relief at news that planned electricity disconnections have been suspended for two weeks.
Power supplier Eskom was scheduled to disconnect power in the Ngwathe, Dihlabeng and Maluti-a-Phofung municipalities over some R736-million in arrears debt owed to it. However, spokesperson Tony Stott says Eskom decided to suspend the disconnection by two weeks following an urgent meeting held with Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown and Cooperative Governance Minister Pravin Gordan this morning.
He says municipalities need to use this time to submit realistic payment plans for approval.
