Phase two of marshal parking system underway

LERATO LELIA

The Mangaung metro municipality is currently rolling out the second phase of the parking meter marshal system. The phase will see the system being rolled out in Preller Square; Fontein, Charles, East Burger, West Burger, Fichardt and Henry Street.

“We are executing what the Executive Mayor said when he launched the parking marshal system, that it is going to expand to other parts of the city. Of course having improved from what we launched before. In terms of technology as well, we have improved the system," said the Mangaung Metropolitan Spokesperson, Qondile Khedama.

A number of features have been added to enhance the system and curb non-compliance from both motorists and the Parking Marshals which include:

Occupancy management system: The system will measure the amount of time every bay is occupied daily.

Realtime Parking Viewer: Motorists will be able to view which parking bays are available in areas with parking meters.

Motorist Feedback: This website enables motorists to submit reports regarding fraudulent actions or activities of parking marshals working in cities and towns of South Africa.

Prepaid Parking Touchcard: Motorists will soon be able to purchase a quickpark touchcard, a cashless payment system which can be loaded with credit.

The Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality Council, following public hearings in 2012, adopted the enrolment of a Parking Marshal System in Mangaung to promote fair turnover of motor vehicles for the entire off street parking bays of the Municipality.

Phase 3 of the parking system will be rolled out in Brandwag, Westdene and Universitas while the last phase will see the system being extended to Botshabelo CBD and Thaba Nchu CBD.

The project started operating from 1 August last year in the Bloemfontein CBD as part of the efforts by the municipality to reduce crime and theft from parked vehicles and to promote the free flow of traffic.
