In a bid to address prolonged power outages and the constant replacement of old equipment, Centlec procured three power transformers for the three distribution centers in Bloemfontein and Botshabelo.
These will be connected at three Mangaung Metro substations—Noordstad DC, Bayswater DC and Botshabelo Substation.
According to Centlec, this equipment represents a key investment in the utility’s efforts to strengthen the electricity network while supporting the growth plans of the metro and surrounding businesses.
“The procurement of these power transformers is in direct response to the requirement of strengthening the secure supply to our Mangaung Metro community. The commissioning of these power transformers will create the N-1 contingency, meaning that the existing transformer will be reinforced with an additional transformer.”
Two transformers will share the load, and should one fail, the remaining unit will continue supplying electricity to ensure uninterrupted service.
Quick facts about the transformers (as provided):
• Noordstad DC: supplies the fast growing residential and business load in the North of Bloemfontein and it received a 20/22 MVA, 132/11kV power transformers to reinforce the existing one on site.
• Bayswater DC: supplies a significant established load and the old and failed power transformer needed replacing. This replacement will support the N-1 contingency at Bayswater DC: A 20MVA, 33/11kV was delivered there.
• Botshabelo Substation T received a 20MVA, 33/11kV transformer to support and create the N-1 contingency at that substation.
