There are 58 000 households in Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality consisting of Qwaqwa, Harrismith and Kestell that don’t pay for or buy electricity.
According to Mayor Vusi Tshabalala these households have access to free illegal electricity due to electricity tampering. Tshabalala explained that only 40 000 out of 98 000 households around the municipality buy and pay for electricity.
He said they have hired a thousand people who will assess tampering of electricity in households as it has become a serious problem.
“The team will be going through each and every household where they will be able to write down all information they get from those information prepaid boxes, which what we are currently doing. We have also gone out to communities to inform them that anybody who will be found tampering with electricity from September’s electricity will be shut down and a criminal offence case will opened against them,” said Tshabalala.
