The Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) is strengthening its bid to host matches for the 2027 Cricket World Cup following a high-level engagement with Cricket South Africa and key municipal stakeholders.
The metro has been identified as a potential host city for the global tournament. Speaking to the publication, acting general communications manager at MMM, Nicolette Maysiels, said the formal bidding process will be led by the Free State Cricket Union (FSCU). Maysiels explained any infrastructure upgrades to the Mangaung Oval and surrounding facilities fall under the responsibility of the FSCU. “The upgrade of the Mangaung Oval remains the responsibility of the Free State Cricket Union as per the signed MOU with the Mangaung Metro,” she said.
She added the municipality has established a working relationship with Cricket South Africa and the local organising committee to position Bloemfontein as a viable host city. The initiative is aimed at ensuring the city is ready to host both local and international visitors.
According to Maysiels, the executive mayor has highlighted the potential of the tournament to promote cultural diversity, tourism, and economic growth, while showcasing the hospitality of Mangaung residents.
The metro also plans to ensure that local communities and businesses benefit from the event. Through its integrated development plan (IDP), the municipality aims to leverage major events to stimulate the local economy, with a focus on supporting small businesses, promoting tourism, and creating job opportunities. “Plans include promoting local vendors, cultural showcases, and service contracts to ensure grassroots participation. CSA has pledged that the World Cup will benefit all South Africans, aligning with Mangaung’s local economic strategies,” she said.
Maysiels said while the city sees the opportunity as a major milestone to showcase the internationally accredited Mangaung Oval and its ability to host large-scale events, timelines for preparations are still being finalised in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
The municipality emphasised that community involvement will be key, with residents expected to play an active role in welcoming visitors and contributing to the overall success of the tournament.
